My oh my did Monroe have it wrong. Pearls are a classic timeless accessory, that owe much thanks to such films as The Great Gatsby, Serena, Midnight in Paris and Magic in the Moonlight. Popular from the 20s, and lasting even to the 50s, these shows helped promote antique jewels as a fabulous feature for every woman.
Nothing beats antique jewelry pearls; timeless taste never goes out of style!
Icons such as Jackie O and Audrey Hepburn coveted them, and as media and film moved from the 20s and headed away from Gatsby towards the 40s and 50s, pearls still dazzled our screen.
When you consider Peggy Carter in Marvel’s Agent Carter, and the ladies of Mad Men, it is clear to see 40s fashion and accessories are a rising trend today.
Minimalist is dead and boring, so there’s no better way to accessorize then with broad, big pieces. Broaches from the 40s or 50s add more flair Pearl embellishing clothes such as shirts, jeans, skirts or even shoes add more fashion and flavor to a outfit, or if Jackie O is your inspiration, pair pearls with dresses and sophisticated gowns for an elegant look. Dress up office wear with these versatile stones, or knot them around like the flappers do for an antique custom jewelry look. So fabulous… there’s even a whole tradition of wearing pearls on your wedding day.
“Pearls are always appropriate” said Jackie Kennedy, after all, and there’s a reason these beauties charmed the necks of the flappers, the beautiful and the damned, and the iconic of the 40s and 50s. Nothing beats the stylistic genius of Audrey Hepburn in Givenchy, standing outside Tiffany’s on a cold morning with her breakfast. And there’s nothing as classic and timeless as the pearls, which will be making a comeback, bolder in 2015. We have Gatsby to thank for that.
But at the risk of calling back to the 1920s- a decade of which we’re almost celebrating a centennial, it’s all about wearing these timeless pieces well and accenting your body, and making sure you don’t look like your grandmother, even if they are truly vintage. Remember the anthem of 2014, courtesy of Macklemore; I wear your granddad’s clothes, I look incredible.
As the First Lady of fashion herself; Coco Chanel said “A woman needs ropes and ropes of pearls” and if you just buy one ( but why buy just one?!) accessory this year; let it be the pearls that you can drape on yourself at the end of the year Mad Men parties, the Flapper and 20s themed White Parties of spring and summer. Let pearls be your everyday piece, because there is nothing wrong with them being your best each day.
Lady Sarah Churchill said it best when she claimed; “I feel undressed if I don’t have my pearls on”
